Plain English on purpose. Each section says what it means in one or two short paragraphs.

Summary disclaimer

FSBO Auto provides document templates and filing directions for private-party vehicle sales. That is all we provide.

Nothing on this site is legal advice. We are not a law firm and we do not know your situation. If you need legal advice, talk to a lawyer licensed in your state.

We are not a party to your sale. The contract is between the buyer and the seller. We do not buy, sell, inspect, insure, finance, title, or deliver vehicles, and we never hold or move money.

Guidance only. Every state rule on this site carries a verification date and its official sources. Rules, fees, forms, and deadlines change. You are responsible for confirming current requirements with your state DMV or county office before you file.

No outcomes are promised. We do not promise a particular price, a clean title, that a step can be completed online, or that any document will protect you in a dispute. We describe what the state requires and give you a document that records what both sides agreed.

Partner services (history reports, valuations, escrow, inspections, insurance, financing, warranties, transport) are provided by third parties under their own terms. We may earn a referral fee. We are not responsible for their services.

1. What FSBO Auto is

FSBO Auto is a website that gives people buying or selling a vehicle privately two things: document templates for their state, and plain-English directions for filing the paperwork their state requires. It also connects you to third-party services such as history reports, valuations, escrow, inspections, insurance, financing, warranties, and transport.

That is the whole service. We do not buy or sell vehicles, hold money, inspect cars, or give legal advice.

2. What FSBO Auto is not

We are not a dealer, broker, or marketplace. We are not an escrow agent, bank, or money transmitter. We are not a title or registration service. We are not a law firm, and nothing on the site is legal advice.

We are not a party to your sale. The agreement to buy and sell is between you and the other person.

3. You are responsible for your deal

You decide whether to buy or sell, at what price, and on what terms. You are responsible for checking the other party, the vehicle, and the documents. You are responsible for confirming your state's current requirements, fees, and deadlines with the official agency before filing, and for filing on time.

Our state guides show the date they were last verified and link to the official sources we used. Rules change. If a guide and an official source disagree, the official source is right.

4. Documents

The bill of sale and other documents are templates. They are filled with the information you and the other party enter. We do not check that it is true. You are responsible for what you sign.

A document generated here does not by itself transfer title. Title transfers happen the way your state says they do, usually on the title certificate and your state's application form at the office your state names.

Where a state allows electronic signatures on a document, we say so. Where a state requires ink, we say that too. We never claim a state's forms can be signed electronically when they cannot.

5. Deadlines and estimates

Deadline countdowns run from the sale date you enter. If you enter the wrong date, the countdown is wrong. Tax estimates are estimates; the county computes the real figure when you file. Value ranges are indicative, labelled with their source, and are not appraisals.

6. Third-party services

History reports, valuations, escrow, and other partner services are provided by other companies under their own terms and prices. When you click through to a partner, you are dealing with that partner. We may receive a referral fee. We are not responsible for their services, their data, or their decisions.

If you use escrow, the escrow partner holds the money, not us. We only store the partner's transaction number and its status.

7. No promises about outcomes

We do not promise that your sale will complete, that the title will be clean, that the price is fair, that any step can be done online, that any document will protect you in a dispute, or any other outcome. We describe what your state requires and record what both sides agreed.

8. Our responsibility to you (limitation of liability)

[Attorney to draft.] Working intent: to the extent the law allows, FSBO Auto is not responsible for losses that come from your sale, the other party's conduct, the vehicle, a partner's service, a missed deadline, a change in state rules, or your reliance on a guide instead of the official source. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to what you paid us for the deal in question.

9. Your account and deal links

Deal pages are reached through personal links. Anyone with your link can see and change your side of the checklist. Do not forward it. We are not responsible for what someone does with a link you shared.

10. Acceptable use

Do not use the site to misrepresent a vehicle, a title, a price, or your identity. Do not enter anyone else's personal information without their permission. Do not enter payment card or bank account details anywhere on the site; we never ask for them and we reject them.

11. Changes and ending the service

We may change the site, the guides, and these terms. The verification date on each guide and the version on each document tell you what you were looking at. We may suspend access for misuse.

12. Governing law and disputes

[Attorney to draft: governing law, venue, dispute resolution, and any consumer-protection requirements in the states we serve.]
